“Morning and eve the old bell rings;
Its silver voice is calling me
To prayer and quiet sanctuary
Here in the heart of things…”
Poem excerpt “The Church in the Heart of Things” by David Pugh Griffith, from A History of St. Luke’s Church, by the Reverend Robert Philip Kreitler.
Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church is an inclusive community. We celebrate Eucharist (from a Greek word meaning ‘thanksgiving’) through word and sacrament every Saturday at 5:00 pm (Said liturgy) and every Sunday at 10:00 am (Sung liturgy). We also offer Centering Prayer and Bible and book study opportunities. Please see our current schedule at This Week at St. Luke’s for more information.
All are warmly welcome.

The Nativity window designed by Tiffany Studios, was given in 1910 in memory of Mrs. Lydia Merell (Poore) Dickson, wife of George L. Dickson. It is one of the exquisite details of St. Luke’s. Our current edifice, built in 1871 was designed by renowned ecclesial architect, Richard Upjohn. The interior was rebuilt and improved in 1905 under the artistic direction of Louis Comfort Tiffany.

On Friday, July 2, 2021, St. Luke’s celebrated 150 years in our current building.
Begun in 1866, ground was broken for our second edifice which was designed by renowned ecclesial architect, Richard Upjohn, architect of Trinity Church, Wall St. NYC. Upjohn’s gothic design is what is often referred to as Elizabethan or “Ornamental English.” On October 9, 1867, The Bishop of the Diocese, The Right Reverend William Stevens, came to Scranton to lay the cornerstone. Construction was hindered by a very serious strike by mine workers in 1869 which had a disastrous impact on businesses and other events in the community. Under the direction of the building committee composed of General Elisha Phinney, Messrs. George L. Dickson, B.H Throop M.D., and H. B. Rockwell construction was completed. On July 2, 1871, Bishop Stevens, and the Rector, The Reverend A. A. Marple conducted the first service.
We enjoyed welcoming the community to our celebration on July 2,2021 which included a festive anniversary liturgy ,open house with tours, exhibits, and other activities.
We look forward to 150 more years in the “heart of things.” Please join us anytime. All are always welcome at St. Luke’s!
